How to Jailbreak Your 2.0 3G iPhone (Windows)

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your 2.0, 3G iPhone using Windows and WinPwn.

To follow this tutorial you will need to have iTunes 7.7 installed (make sure to reboot). Also, you may need to download and install .Net Framework if you are on Windows XP.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage. In it place Winpwn 2.0.0.3: here or here and the latest 2.0 firmware.

Step Two
Install WinPwn by extracting the downloaded zip from Step One and running the setup executable. Once WinPwn has been installed it will put a shortcut icon on your desktop. Double click to launch the application.

Step Three
Once WinPwn has opened click the Browse .ipsw button.

Step Four
Locate the 2.0 firmware file (iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw) from the Pwnage folder on your desktop and click Open.

Step Five
WinPwn will check the firmware to make sure its valid. Now click the IPSW Builder button.

Step Six
The IPSW Builder window will open to the Applications tab. Check to select Cydia and if you are not on AT&T then check to select YouTube Fix.

Step Seven
Click to select the Custom Images tab. From here you can can select
your own boot images.

Step Eight
Click to select the Custom Payload tab. From this tab you can select custom payloads you have created to be automatically installed. We will discuss this in a future tutorial.

Step Nine
Click to select the Advanced tab. Check to select: Activate Phone.

Step Ten
Click the Build .ipsw button at the bottom left to build your custom ipsw firmware file. Navigate to your Pwnage folder and click the Save button.

Step Eleven
Once WinPwn has finished creating your custom firmware then click the iPwner button from the main menu.

Step Twelve
Select the custom firmware file we just built from the Pwnage folder on your desktop and click the Open button.

Step Thirteen
You will then be notified that your iTunes has been Pwned!

Step Fourteen
Next we will need to put the iPhone in the DFU mode and restore using iTunes. To put your iPhone into DFU mode please follow these instructions: Press and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons for 10 seconds. At this point the screen will turn black, and the iPhone will appear to be off. Continue holding the Home button until a recovery mode graphic pops up via iTunes (Step 15-fifteen), then let go of the Home button. You may need to try this more than once if you don't get the recovery mode pop up the first time. It happens, just try again.

Step Fifteen
iTunes will prompt you that you are in recovery mode.

Hold down Shift and click the Restore button in iTunes.

A popup window will appear asking you to select your firmware. Select the Custom firmware file we saved in the Pwnage folder and then click the Open button.

Your iPhone will now be restored to the jailbroken 2.0 firmware! When it finishes everything you should have a jailbroken 3G iPhone running 2.0 firmware with the App Store.

Hi,

Jailbreak very successful, thanks for the tutorial. However, have no carrier signals, am on O2 in UK. I tried unchecking Activate iphone box before building ipsw, but this has not worked, I still have no carrier settings.
Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Hi,

I started again. This time at step 9 I unchecked the activate phone button (as I'm with o2). I also opened a new folder to save the custom built software (dont know if this made any difference).
Anyway, iphone now pwned & O2 working fine.
Good luck & thanks again for the tutorial.

To people who aren't getting carrier settings, once u have restored to your custom pwn are u selecting set up the phone as new or restore from earlier point??? I selected mine as set up as new and it worked.

Sorry worth mentioning, when I tried to restore to my customer one Itunes kept giving me an error. I did a manual reset - for those who don't know hold the sleep/wake and home key for 10 seconds or so until the phone kicks back into life. Then started again with putting the phone into DFU mode and it worked flawlessly. Hope this helps and saves someone hours of scratching their head!

If you are on an authorize carrier, the there is no need to press activate the phone. iTunes will recognize your sim and do it for you.
If you do this then it will all go smoothly.

i keep getting error 6 when restoring the phone with custom firmware anyone know a fix for this?

tomasizabean said...

"error (6)"thats the same thing i get even if i uncheck the activate button (cuz i already have at&t) no matter what i do i still get that same thing....EVERY TIME!!!....help!

tomasizabean said...

when restoring my iphone should i restore it as a new phone or???...

Unknown said...

Good question....do we restore as new or can we go back to an earlier sync to retain music, settings and contacts?

Unknown said...

must restore as new
i keep getting errr and my vista pc
but it worked fine on my xp system

Unknown said...

If you get an error 6 in Itunes bring the phone out of DFU by holding the wake/sleep button and the homekey button. Then restart the process again that is what I did on My XP system and it went through fine. Once the firmware is uploaded select SET UP PHONE AS NEW and then it should work fine.

if you are getting 6 error then you are not getting your device int o DFU mode correctly. Try this: after you are done with everyting and you are ready to DFU mode, hold down the power and home button for like 30 sec as long as it needs for itunes to recognize your device in recovery mode.
do not forget to press the pwaner button afetr you built your custom 2.0 firmware. it'll tell you that your itunes has been pwned.

Just a quick note...please ensure that you are using WINPWN 2.0.0.3 as the Error 6 problem was fixed in that release.

it seemed to work fine. thanks for the help. but when i get the phone on, it does not give carrier signal or bars. when i try to place any call, it immediately says "call failed". i am an at&t customer. also, it would not let me select a custom payload. it would open up a window to select something, but i have no custom payloads on my computer or even know what that is? can anybody offer any assistance... now my phone is not working?

-Administration- said...

Blaze,

You are an AT&T customer. Therefore no need to hacktivate another word for activate but on a non authorized provider. You need to do the whole process over and NOT check activate phone and youtube fix!! or you will end up with the same result.

TRAVIS<

My links lead to 2.0.0.3 they do not lead to outdated software. thanks

Quick question, I am with AT&T and didnt have a problem with DFU mode or anything but after the Jailbreak process my signal bars dont show up nor the AT&T logo next to it

Anonymous said...

Oh yea and I didnt check the activate phone tab or youtube fix only the cydia tab, and like blaze i didnt check the custom payload tab because I didnt have any...

Unknown said...

im on step 15 and trying to right click the restore button but it goes straight to.. uh something else... can u explain from that step

I know YOUR links lead to the right place, but I downloaded somewhere else first and then found your instruction page. Your instructions were much more clear than what I found. I did not mean anything derogatory or bad aboout your links. Please accept my sincerest apology. Your instructions and links are perfect.

Ok i had the error 6 before too and this how i fixed it. I did not use any custom images. That seemed to fix the problem for me.

And many thanks to the writer of this guide!

through this whole process do you have your iphone 3g plugged in to your pc? Also, how do I restore my iphone 3g back to its original factory settings if i decide to go back....

I keep getting a message saying "failed to create custom IPSW! Do you want to close the IPSW builder?" It happens everytime I try to build the custom IPSW (except once when it just closed down and I had a 1kb custom file, which I deleted). How do I get past this? Thanks!

-Administration- said...

Dear users,

I know that for some this method is difficult. For those who have ran into problems...I can't help because i don't know what you did wrong. If you repeatedly can not complete the process then you need to read this page:

Its a special price for $35.

Thank you

This worked perfectly! Thanks for the great tutorial. I was having problems at first with the error(6) in itunes fo rthe first few times that I tried but I figured out that I was not putting the phone into DFU mode properly. If you are having this problem try connecting your phone to your computer, hold the home and power buttons until the phone goes to a black screen. Release the power button while continuing to hold home. My computer popped up a windows saying it had found a device in DFU mode and the phone's screen stayed black. It worked for me, hope this helps someone.

help..

when i attempt to build the custom firmware, when it gets to the very end of the build, winpwn completely crashes and shuts down! when i reopen winpwn and attempt to "browse" the new custom firmware, which was saved to my PWNED folder, it says "unknown file".. basically i guess it didnt finish creating the firmware before winpwn crashed..

why is this happening?? am i the only one this has happened to? i've looked at all the comments and no one else has seemed to have this problem with winpwn crashing before the firmware could finish being made..

very frustrating.. i've tried over and over again and it does this every time.. BTW, i have windows XP.. do i need to install the .net thing that was mentioned in the beggining of the tutorial??

Unknown said...

With Rogers From Canada.. tried everything.. can get cydia installed correctly, but can't get a signal.. tried everything, activate check and unchecked, itube check and unchecked.. no luck.. like i said cydia installed, but can't get a signal.. question: What is meant by New activation, versus existing restore?.. please help.. bought iphone today, and no it's useless.. LOL

I have same problems as Dave - using XP, winpwn gets to the point of writing IPSW then either closes down completely or gives me an error message saying failed to write ipsw and the "output" file I end up with is approx 300 KB and winpwn states it is unrecognised file format - Any idea's anyone? (I've tried this over and over again since last night)

-Administration- said...

B2B,
Make sure you download Net Framework. You need to follow the directions. If that don't help, then make sure you are putting your device into DFU mode and not Restore mode.

-Administration- said...

Nehal,

After the neutbooter is done and your iphone restarts itself, you might not have a signal. you need to restart the phone again on your own and then you'll have a signal. If you have an authorized carrier and would like to unlock you do not need to click actiavte. the only time you need to activate is when you are using an un-authorized sim, like, t-mobile.

-Administration- said...

Dave,

OF COURSE you need Net Framework is i mention it. Hope you figured this out on your own and it worked. If not do it.

Anonymous said...

i tried to install the net framework and my system aborted saying this version was NOT compatible with a previous version i alreeady have installed.. that was it..

no what??

Unknown said...

I did it! It did take about 4 tries. I got the error 5 and error 1 messages. I dont think that I had it in true DFU mode at first. It has to be at black screen, not the symbol of a cord plugging into I-tunes. Now I will try to start loading custom sounds.
Thanks much.

For those Having troubles with the carrier on 3gs and have a contract with a carrier, this is for you:
The only thing to do is to jailbreak again and in general settings unselect the activate button.
