Next iPhone To Be 3G, Have Front Video Chat Camera?

Here's an interesting little rumor: in the latest instillation of the hit podcast Diggnation, the podcast about the social news website Digg.com, founder Kevin Rose claimed to have heard rumors say that the next revision of the iPhone would be 3G-capable and have a second camera on the front for video chatting.

Keep in mind, we have no way of confirming how true this is, so definitely don't take our word for it. That said, 3G has been mentioned before. As for the camera on the front, it would make a lot of sense and be way cool, but I have to wonder if Steve would be comfortable adding to the device's facade.

iPhone has the potential to take over handheld gaming

The iPhone is in a significantly different class of performance, has far more internal resources for games, and is equipped with a variety of other hardware–from its camera to its ubiquitous (if slow) mobile network to its multitouch high resolution display and accelerometers–all of which have to power to unlock entirely new classes of games and other more serious applications.

As a handheld console, this feature set makes the iPhone a bit like the Wii, with interactive new gameplay features, and a bit like the PS3, with higher performance gaming specs and additional online and media capabilities. Buyers won’t have to decide if they want a handheld game console; they’ll get it for free when they buy the iPhone or iPod Touch.

Further, because Apple is attaching game development as a sidecar dessert on top of a device that is primarily monetized as a hardware sale (boosted by retail and accessory sales, media sales, and carrier revenue sharing), developers will get more bang from their buck and will incur less risk developing games for the iPhone. The iPhone has also already proven itself as a very desirable smartphone, even before the arrival of any native games, ameliorating the worries of a whether games developers should invest in the platform.

Firmware 1.2 Beta Has Self-Destruction Feature

Now that developers have started to be excepted into Apple's iPhone Dev program, many of those who weren't will most likely be looking for a leaked copy of the 1.2 beta version of the iPhone firmware. To counteract this, Apple has put some limitations in place to stop this from happening.

Apple's SDK documentation warns:

“Once you install the pre-release iPhone OS on your device, such device may only be used for development and testing purposes until the final (GM) version of the iPhone OS is released. In addition, you will need to install new versions of the software from time to time throughout the beta period. Failure to install the most current version will, after a period of time, put your device in a deactivated state.”

It's also been found that the beta fimrware updates the device's baseband, making the update permanent and unable to be downgraded from. So, once you dedicate an iPhone to development, it will stay that way until the next public firmware update.

The 1.2 beta also disables the devices raido, meaning it can no longer make phone calls.

Allegedly there are patches floating around the hacking community for the beta, but so far none have been released.

Mac mini to See Update After All

AppleInsider is reporting that they were wrong about previous claims that the Mac mini was to be discontinued.

People familiar with the matter are informing AppleInsider that a small team of engineers have been tasked with updating the internals of the Mac mini.

Among the improvements destined for the new lineup are 45-nanometer Core 2 Duo mobile chips starting at 2.1GHz with 3MB of shared L2 cache, an 800MHz front-side bus (up from 667MHz), and a step up to the same Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics processor employed by the existing line of 13-inch consumer MacBooks. .

Apple's long term plans for the Mac mini are still unknown; however, this update should see the Mac mini around for at least one year.

iBooter Improves on iPhuc Capabilities

iBooter is an interactive console for iBoot (the apple bootloader). Most of you would have used iphuc, which uses iBoot. However, it's dependant on iTunes the mobile device library and can't get replies from iBoot, which results in one way communication, where you blindly say cmd setenv foo, but you never know what happened.

With iBooter you can debug phone booting issues as well as run it in Linux/MacOS/Windows without iTunes installed. You can use iBooter to read memory/write memory, load ramdisks, change your wifi mac address, read files from nand and much more!

Apple Patent Illustrates Possible DVR Functions for iPhone, iPod Devices

A recently unearthed patent filing shows Apple is thinking beyond its current living room video vending machine, the Apple TV. Among a number of new features, the design specifies how DVR information could be sent to a portable remote control similar to Apple's existing iPod and iPhone, taking integration among its products to a new level.

And it's not just working together for the sake of some superficial "better together" marketing angle. How many times have you heard friends discussing some great new show that you missed? With the capabilities Apple illustrates, one could perhaps call up the TV listings right from their iPhone and schedule to record the next episode. What's unknown is how Apple would transfer recorded DVR shows to an iPod or iPhone -- would recordings by synced through iTunes? And, if so, would they be tied to an authorized account to discourage internet redistribution?

In fact, while the addition of DVR features might raise questions about Apple retreating from selling TV shows, it would really reflect the reality of these show purchases being opportunistic (as well as perhaps serving as a tactic to bring NBC back to the bargaining table). Besides, DVR integration with the iTunes store could lead to more revenue opportunities. In the aforementioned scenario, the DVR could offer the opportunity to buy the episodes missed so far.

While patents don't necessarily portend market entry, would TiVo be able to withstand a market entry from Apple better than the Rio or Treo did? The DVR pioneer has stepped up its service offerings significantly over the past few years; few broadband-delivered TV entertainment services have escaped its partnership purview. These have included internet information and casual games, TV shows and movies on demand, subscription music services, video podcasts and more. No US TV platform offers a more versatile array of services, but the jack-of-all-trades approach still hasn't brought sustained profitability or enough pull from TiVo's simpler and cheaper cable competition.

Apple would be well-positioned to supersede even TiVo's functionality if it offered an SDK for Apple TV (or a DVR-enabled successor) as it has for the iPhone. In addition, Apple could gain a significant marketing advantage versus TiVo – and indeed the cable companies -- if it stuck to its subscription-averse philosophy, or perhaps rolled the subscription fee into .Mac. The latter could provide online TV listings for remote scheduling similar to the way MSN offers the feature for Windows Media Center.

Apple could clearly bring a lot to the DVR. The question is, what could the DVR bring to Apple that would motivate it to play in this extremely competitive market? (This is not a new question to Switched On readers.) However, an opportunity to bolster its offerings in portable electronics markets that it leads (iPod) or where its share is growing (iPhone) might persuade Apple to see the living room as a more strategic support environment for its iCosystem and less of a cash cow.

Apple Not Planning iTunes Subscriptions After All

Reports that Apple is discussing an "all-you-can-eat" subscription music service with major record labels are overblown, say people in a position to know. But giving customers access to the entire iTunes catalog in exchange for a premium on iPod music players isn't a bad idea—and it's one Apple may need to consider.

According to a story in the Financial Times, Apple (AAPL) would charge enough for iPod and iPhone devices to cover the cost of licensing entire music collections. It would use that premium to create a pool of revenue, a portion of which would be divided among the major music labels, the newspaper said.

Trouble is, no such talks are under way, according to people familiar with Apple's plans. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment. Insiders at major music labels were similarly dismissive. One person familiar with the matter said the idea of subscription plan has been "kicked around" for about a year, but said there have been "no meaningful discussions" on the subject.

Singapore to Launch iPhone in September ?

Channel News Asia is reporting that Singapore Telecommunications Ltd is launching the Apple iPhone in September. They cite industry sources for this information.

"The news, if true, is positive for SingTel. Given iPhone's (appeal to consumers), we believe iPhone would lead to higher market share for SingTel. However, the impact on SingTel's bottom line should not be very significant given Apple's hard bargaining tendency and tough competition from StarHub," said DBS Vickers in a note to clients.

It is estimated that Singaporeans have bought at least 10,000 iPhones since the phone was launched in the US.

If the news is true, Singapore would be the first country in Asia to officially get the iPhone.

Adobe Backpedals on iPhone Flash Player

Adobe Systems on Wednesday backpedaled on recent comments from chief executive Shantanu Narayen, saying the company wants to build a Flash media player for the iPhone, but would not be able to without Apple's help.

In an emailed statement Adobe says it can now start working on the iPhone Flash Player,

"However, to bring the full capabilities of Flash to the iPhone Web-browsing experience, we do need to work with Apple beyond and above what is available through the SDK and the current license around it," the company said. "We think Flash availability on the iPhone benefits Apple and Adobe's millions of joint customers, so we want to work with Apple to bring these capabilities to the device."

Earlier Narayen had said that, We have evaluated (the software developer tools) and we think we can develop an iPhone Flash player ourselves."

Garter: 2.0 Update To Make iPhone Business-Ready

Garter changed their verdict on the iPhone's business-readiness today in anticipation of the upcoming business-friendly iPhone 2.0 update. The firm granted "applicance-level" status to the iPhone today, meaning that according to them, the update will make the iPhone secure and functional enough to be used for enterprise purposes.

The firm had this to say about the iPhone and the 2.0 update:

"Appliance-level" status permits the iPhone to be used for PIM, e-mail, telephony and browsing applications. It also permits the device to be used for other dedicated functions where the software is supplied by a third party, functionality is kept to a restricted set, the software supplier offers support for a backup platform and IT development resources are not needed to program custom code locally residing on the device.

The real kicker came from Garter vice president and analyst Ken Dulaney:

"The iPhone will thus match up initially in several segments against its main smartphone competitors—BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Symbian Series 60."

Details From an Accepted iPhone Dev Program Member

Developer Ashutosh Chaturvedi is one of the few coders who has actually been accepted into Apple’s $99 iPhone Developer program. The program allows access to pre-release iPhone software (including the OS 2.0 beta); technical support; the ability to get code onto iPhones for testing; and distribution of applications via the new App Store.

Ashutosh posted a series of Apple documents, explaining the program, to his blog. Among the salient details:

iPhone OS 2.0 software has the ability to deactivate unregistered phones

Apple’s documentation states: “Once you install the pre-release iPhone OS on your device, such device may only be used for development and testing purposes until the final (GM) version of the iPhone OS is released. In addition, you will need to install new versions of the software from time to time throughout the beta period. Failure to install the most current version will, after a period of time, put your device in a deactivated state. Updating to the most current version will re-activate your device so that you may continue testing”

Apple also says that installing the pre-release software on unregistered iPhones will render the devices inoperable.

Application distribution is not available during the beta period There is no way to distribute applications for testing or other purposes during the developer program beta.

Teams If you are accepted into the program, you can invite colleagues to join your “team,” allowing these collegaues to create their own development certificates, access the beta software and run development routines.

No limit on provisioned devices Provisioning profiles are files that associates device IDs and development certificates, allowing the iPhone OS 2.0 beta and applications built with Xcode to be installed to devices. There is no limit to the number of provisioning profiles the Team Admin can create for the team, but each profile can only specify 1-5 device IDs.

Web code locks up iPhones and iPod Touch [Update #2]

Remember the iPhone and iPod Touc Safari exploit that causes the iPhone and iTouc to crash?

So far, Apple has had no comment. The code was first reported in January and exhausts the memory in Safari, which in turn will cause your iPhone or iPod Touch to freeze, or your desktop Safari to crash. "Given the nature of this issue," said the BugTraq newsgroup vulnerability report, "remote code execution may also be possible, but this has not been confirmed."

There is no patch available from Apple. The recommended workaround is to disable Javascript within Safari. To do so:

1. Under Edit, click Preferences.
2. Click the Security icon.
3. Uncheck Enable JavaScript.
4. Close and restart Safari.

Apple Considering Clamshell iPhone Design?

Apple could be embracing the clamshell aesthetic for a future iPhone. What does this mean for a hacked iPhone and a jailbroken iPod Touch?

Unwiredview.com found an Apple patent application for a "dual-sided trackpad device," which resembles the current iPhone redesigned into the clamshell format so popular with many mobile phones. The key to this design is having touch-screen capabilities on both the top and bottom of the phone when it's open.

This design goes a step further, as well, in that the closed cover of the iPhone could also have trackpad capability. PC makers have experimented with this, adding some basic buttons and capabilities to the covers of closed notebooks. Apple's patent application describes how you could use the closed iPhone as an iPod, with controls for advancing to the next track, adjusting the volume, and so forth.

It's quite possible that Apple could be considering other form factors for future generations of iPhones, but I wonder how the touch-screen keyboard and the video player would work on a clamshell model where the one big screen is now divided across two panels. Patent applications aren't necessarily indicative of product plans, but they often provide hints of what companies are thinking about down the road.

iPhone Developer Program [Update #2]

Apple has sent another mass mailing to coders who applied for the iPhone Developer program, stating:

“Thank you for applying to the iPhone Developer Program. We have many more requests than we can serve during this initial beta period, so we must limit the Program at this time. We plan to expand it during the beta period, and we will contact you regarding your enrollment status at the appropriate time. We appreciate your patience.”

The same message appears on the iPhone developer Web site under the heading “Already applied to the Program?”

A previous message, interpreted by many developers as a rejection letter, stated essentially same sentiment with different wording: “At this time, the iPhone Developer Program is available to a limited number of developers and we plan to expand the program during the course of the beta period.”

Have you been accepted to the iPhone developer program? Please let me know by sending me an email.

New iPhone Safari Exploit Crashes iPhone

iPhoneWorld.ca is reporting a new iPhone Safari remote execution DoS exploit which locks up your iPhone by simply visiting a malicious page.

The exploit which did affect Safari for both iPhone and PC was just patched in the Safari 3.1 update yesterday. It has not been fixed for the iPhone or iPod yet.

The exploit uses a webpage to run malicious code which freezes your iPhone causing you to loose any open and unsaved data. iPhoneWorld.ca indicates that they have tested the exploit with 1.1.4 but assume it to work with other firmware versions as well.

Apple will most likely repair this in the next firmware update. You can view the malicious code here.

Adobe to Build Flash Player for iPhone

Adobe Systems Inc. has begun work to create a media player destined for Apple Inc.'s iPhone, Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen said Tuesday.

Narayen's comments come after Steve Jobs has indicated that Flash is not available for the iPhone due to performance issues. Steve claimed that the mobile version of Flash was too limited and the full version would not run well.

"We believe Flash is synonymous with the Internet experience, and we are committed to bringing Flash to the iPhone," Narayen said. "We have evaluated (the software developer tools) and we think we can develop an iPhone Flash player ourselves."

Apple Discussing Unlimited Music Plan ?

Apple is in discussions with the music companies about providing customers with access to its entire music library in exchange for paying a premium for its iPod and iPhone devices.

The Financial Times is reporting that negotiations hinge on a dispute over the premium customers would have to pay. While Nokia is offering almost $80 dollars per handset, Apple is said to be offering around $20 per device. “It’s who blinks first, and whether or not anyone does blink,” one executive said.

A subscription model is also under discussion. This model would cost $7-8/month and include the provision for customers to keep up to 40-50 tracks a year, which they would keep even if their subscription ended.

The iPod touch currently starts at $299 US for the 8GB version.

New Diamond-Encrusted iPhone Costs $176,400

As the market price of the iPhone slowly drops in the United States, those crazy jewelers are determined to make them more and more expensive. This time it's Austrian jeweler and designer Peter Aloisson, with his take on what a diamond-encrusted iPhone should look like.

So far we've seen them slap on gold, platinum, sapphires anddiamonds, each more expensive then the the last. The highest price was previously the diamond and sapphire iPhone at US$41,225+, but now Aloisson is striking back with his take on the diamond iPhone worth a staggering $US176,400, making it the worlds most expensive phone.

It's called the "Princess Plus", because about half of the stones have a square or "princess" cut. In total it contains 17.75 carats of rocks and 18 karat white gold.

Not quite willing to shell out the $176,400? You're in luck. He created a $66,150 model containing only round cut stones.

AT&T Offering $249 8GB Refurbished iPhones Online

You may recall that AT&T was offering refurbished iPhones in their stores for discounted prices. Now they have decided to share with the rest of us by offering it for purchase online from their web site. You can grab a refurbished 8GB iPhone for just $249. That's $150 less than current retail price, or $350 less than it's original price. Allegedly you can get one mailed to you with no prior activation or contract, although activating will be "required". You can get yours from att.com.

How to activate, jailbreak and unlock 1.1.4 firmware with iPlus 2.0b (PPC / intel Mac)

Step 1.

Connect the iPhone to iTunes. Make any needed backups.

Put the iPhone into DFU mode. Do this by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for 10 seconds. At this point the screen will turn black, and the iPhone will appear to be off.

A pop up will appear. Click OK

iTunes will display a RESTORE screen

Download the firmware restore file for 1.1.4 here.. Remember where you put this file and do not decompress it.

Press the Option key and click Restore. A file browser window will open. Navigate to where the firmware file was downloaded, select it, and click Open.

Various messages will appear while the process continues.

When it has finished you should see a "Lets Get Started-Activation" screen next in iTunes.

Eject the iPhone from iTunes when it is finished. Make sure iTunes is closed! Also open Activity Monitor and ensure that iTunes Helper is not running. To do this, go to your Mac's Applications folder, then into the Utilities folder, and you'll find a program called Activity Monitor here. Launch it. At the top there is a drop down box. Make sure My Processes is selected. Now look below for iTunes Helper. Select it and click on Quit Process at the top.
At the pop up that appears, select Force Quit. You can close Activity Monitor now. iTunes Helper will not respawn until your computer is restarted.

Step 2.

Download iPlus version 2.0b here.

Decompress the file and you will be left with a folder on your desktop. I found that Stuff It yielded a corrupted folder, so I used Archive Utility to decompress the zip. You should rename the extracted folder iPlus2.0 By default it will be named iPlus 2.0, but the Terminal does not like spaces in directory names.

If you live outside the United States, you should also download the International support package here, which will include some additional, necessary files. Just rename the file you download to payload.zip, then place it into the iPlus 2.0 program folder, overwriting the existing file. If you live in Brazil, then download this support package instead, and also rename it and overwrite the existing file.

Note: the international packages contain a program that is superior to iWorld. You will now have full caller ID support. To check the supported countries URL BAD NEED A NEW ONE.
Note: you do have the ability to use custom payloads with iPlus. What you would do is swap out the payload.zip file that is in the iPlus folder with your own, and it will automatically load up the phone with the programs contained within it.

If you are feeling adventurous then grab this payload.zip file here and try it out. It will install the following: Cydia and Telesphoreo (instead of BSD Subsystem), Installer, Community Sources, Fake BSD Subsystem (to allow Installer packages that require BSD to install), OpenSSH, SummerBoard themes directory fix, and Term-vt100.

On your Mac, go to your Applications folder, then into the Utilities folder and you will see a program called Terminal there. Launch it. Enter the following:
cd desktop/iPlus2.0 ./iplus -u (this is if you wish to activate, jailbreak and unlock, you can also enter -j for jailbreak only).

After you press return, a lot of text will display.

The iPhone will display the iTunes graphic. Then code will scroll by rapidly.

Some more text will go by and the iPhone will reboot. You will then see a screen with a red bar for the remainder of this process. Note: this iPhone had a 4.6 bootloader on it which is being downgraded to the 3.9 fake blank bootloader, which is reversible.

When the red bar appears first appears, more text will display in the Terminal.

Now that the bootloader downgrade is complete, the unlock can begin.

Now the various programs in the payload are installed.
The final message will be displayed in the Terminal.

You'll be at the slide to unlock screen. The edit home screen message will appear. You should now have signal bars.

Wait about one minute, and the iPhone will reboot again. Now it is safe to use.

Swap out your SIMs and test (if needed).

Step 3.

If you go to your About screen, you'll see you are on 1.1.4 firmware and its matching baseband.

If you launch the Maps application and press the lower left icon, it will locate your approximate position.

Launch the Installer. It will start at the Featured page. If you press the Uninstall button at the bottom, you'll see how many applications were installed by iPlus. These applications also have the common fixes installed (Terminal and BSD Subsystem).

If you should use the Terminal, enter alpine as the password.

Troubleshooting

No system audio? Press Settings, General, Reset, Reset All Settings.

No Installer installed? Download this file. Decompress the zip, then drill down into the folders to this file: libreadline.5.2.dylib Copy this file onto your Mac and put it in this folder path /opt/local/lib You could then simply repeat the entire process again, or you could also manually install the Installer.

Mail crashing? Launch the Terminal on the iPhone and enter: chown -R mobile /var/mobile/Library/Mail

In the window that appears type:

cd desktop/iPlus2.0
then
iplus -u
(If you just need to jailbreak, leave oput the -u from the command!)

The iPhone will display this graphic.

When the red bar appears first appears, more text will display in the DOS window. You may get a repeating message for a couple minutes: "TIMEOUT is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

Now that the bootloader downgrade is complete, the unlock can begin.

Now the various programs in the payload are installed.

The iPhone will next reboot and you will be at the slide to unlock screen. More text will appear in the DOS window. You should at this point have a cell phone signal.

Over 250,000 Bento Downloads

Over 250,000 users have downloaded Bento, the new personal database for Mac OS X Leopard, FileMaker announced today.

The majority of the downloads have come from sales and trial downloaders of Bento in North America, and the company is just now beginning to distribute Bento around the world. In addition to English, Bento is now available in French, Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese.

"Bento's popularity is propelled by the need for easy-to-use organizational software tools such as Bento, and by the rapid adoption of Mac OS X Leopard," said FileMaker president Dominique Goupil.

Bento has also won praise throughout the editorial community. BusinessWeek recently termed it "a powerful organizing tool anyone can use." Bento was honored as Editors' Choice by Laptop magazine, MacWorld magazine (UK) and Mac Observer.

Bento is the stylish, personal database that helps Mac users organize their work and personal life. Designed specifically for Mac OS X Leopard, Bento is an exceptionally easy way to organize contacts, calendars, projects, events, and more, faster and easier than ever before.

Next up for gaming: the MacBook

Peter Cohen's got a good commentary up at Macworld about Apple's should-be next target for gaming, the Macbook. Finally, as of the iPhone SDK announcement, we've seen some serious movement on the gaming front from Apple -- they brought EA in and commissioned their own programmers to punch out some game software to show off the iPhone SDK implementation (and as I've said before, including on the talkcast a few weeks ago, we're only seeing the beginning of what's possible with gaming on the iPhone). So maybe they're finally seeing the light on gaming.

But as is, the Macbook isn't winning any awards as a gaming machine. As Cohen says, yes, the integrated graphics card puts the consumer Mac laptop hopelessly behind the times, but the problem isn't just upgrading the hardware -- the software itself needs to be optimized and redesigned. Apple has always been at the forefront of development, and Leopard especially, with Core Image functionality, looks great in the OS and in applications.

BL3.9FakeBlank WARNING !!!

For those who have installed the 3.9 Fakeblank BL a warning has been issued for those looking to downgrade.

The problem seems to occur when BL3.9FB users attempt a restore/upgrade to 1.0.0, or 1.1.1. Essentially, iTunes thinks that you have no bootloader and then loads a 3.8BL onto your iPhone.

This is a stock 3.8 bootloader so you will not be able to leave BL3.8 unless you open up the phone and testpoint. MuscleNerd has pointed out that all is not lost, because the 3.9 expoits are sill present. However, I would still advise people not to downgrade to 1.0.0 or 1.1.1!

This warning was posted by drg on hackint0sh.

Toast 9 Gains Media Streaming To iPhone

Roxio's Toast Titanium application for the Mac has been one of the best apps out there for creating media, and now they're taking it to the next level. They've moved past the initial disc-burning functionality to include several new features, including camcorder video conversion, Blu-ray disc creation, and a new feature that can stream video to the iPhone/ iPod touch.

Among the list of new features is support for AVCHD camcorder video conversion, which will let you compress videos recorded from camcorders. It also has gained the ability to create Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs, support for automatic tagging of unknown audio tracks with their "audio fingerprint," and internet audio stream recording. Lastly and most interestingly is the new Roxio Streamer, which lets you stream from your Mac to "your Wi-Fi connected iPhone, iPod Touch or to any Internet connected Mac or PC."

Support for CD/DVD burning and TiVo are still included, of course.

Toast 9 is US$99.99, and previously registered users are eligible for a $20 mail-in rebate. You can learn more about Roxio Titanium 9 or download your copy from their website.

Twitterrific For iPhone Unlikely

I'm not big into social networking sites, but Twitter holds a special place in my heart. If I could have any application for my iPhone, the thing I want almost as badly as AIM would be an iPhone version of Twitterrific. Unfortunately, Iconfactory feels that it's unlikely to work. According to Craig Hockenberry of Iconfactory, the makers of Twitterrific. A constantly refreshing Twitter client could kill an iPhone's battery in 4 hours.

In a recent blog post, Craig explains why using a background service to access web-based information can kill the iPhone's battery. Using a prototype version of Twitterrific on the iPhone, allowing the application to automatically refresh every 5 minutes caused the iPhone's battery to almost completely drain after only four hours.

The heart of the problem are the radios. Both the EDGE and Wi-Fi transceivers have significant power requirements. Whenever that hardware is on, your battery life is going to suck. My 5 minute refresh kept the hardware on and used up a lot of precious power.

He goes on to explain how terrible things could get if backgrounding was available to all applications.

What happens when App A uses the network at 5 minutes past the hour, and App B uses it at 10 minutes past, and App C uses it at 15 minutes past, and so on? There’s no way for you to know what other apps are doing is there? And yet the battery is still taking a pounding.

Craig makes an excellent point and feels that APple has done this to keep developers from "collectively shooting ourselves in the feet". A solution for this may be a plugin or service that allows applications to use networking resources at certain times.

It will be interesting to see how AOL handles this hurdle with its AIM client.

iJailBreak 0.6.0 Released

13-year-old developers AriX and Ben have announced the release of iJailBreak 0.6, the most recent version of the iPhone/iPod touch jailbreaking and unlocking utility. The new version, a 21.5 megabyte download, functions as a Universal Binary capalble of running on both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs and offers the following fixes:

-Repairs issues with YouTube.
-Repairs issues with Yahoo! Mail.
-Repairs issues with iTunes purchased songs.

Once one has downloaded, installed, and launched iJailBreak 0.6, they simply need to connect their device and run iJailBreak. Depending on whether you want to jailbreak, unlock (on iPhone), or both, the process could take anywhere from 45 seconds to three or four minutes.
I do not advise to use anything but iPlus

Apple Patent Points to Possible Flip Phone Design

Apple seems to be doing pretty well with its candy bar cell phone design, but a recently discovered patent filing shows a possible iPhone flip phone of sorts among other dual-screen design possibilities. The patent also describes a "dual sided trackpad," which would be translucent and feature touch sensitive panels on each side, allowing for use in either an open or closed position.

Other possible features described within the patent application include possibilities for laptops and tablets based around the technology. In the case of the iPhone, the touchpad would upen a small window on the main display, allowing the unit to work like a SlideShow display under Mac OS X 10.5.

These changes may not be seen immediately, but it's interesting stuff for somewhere down the road...
